The US Presidential Election
1) Election Day is always the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November
2) Americans don´t vote directly for the President à they vote for electors
- 538 electors total
- 270 electors are needed to become President
3) Electoral College
- The 538 electoral votes are divided among the states
- Each state gets at least 3 votes and the rest of the votes is split up roughly in relation to the population of the states
- On Election Day the voters tell their state what candidate should get the state’s electoral votes
4) Complications
- Americans who live abroad send a letter to the state where they last had resided in before they moves
- Americans in the territories don’t have the right to vote
- Since 1964 citizens of D.C. are allowed to vote for their President (4 electoral votes)
